23a74Many of us struggle when it comes to our dogs continuous barks. However just as we talk or cry to tell our parents what is wrong; dogs bark. Barking comes from unclear situations, unfamiliar people, hunger, anxiety, happiness, and pretty much anything bothering them under the sun. The trick is to allow you dog to be exposed to many different situations, people, and/or environments as they grow. This will lower their anxiety and allow them to familiarize themselves with things going on around them.

Below are a few additional things to help you get your dog better acquainted with its surroundings:

Tip 1: Expose your pet to a variety of people: Taking them for short walks, time in a pet friendly park, or simply guests at the home will introduce them to a number of people and pets. Socializing your pet and having doggy play days will assist in this fashion. Correcting your pet when they become vocal towards other dogs and/or people will show them its ok.

Tip 2: Correcting Barking Behaviors with treats: When your dog or pet shows anxiety with a situation use a calming voice to reassure them. If they persist using treats or prompting will encourage them to listen. Too much discipline however can over do it and cause your pet to act out. Be sure they understand what you are saying and stick to it!

Tip 3: Making sure your dog has alone time is important: Many animals just as people go dependent on their masters if they are not spending some time alone in their growing periods. Make sure you spend ample time with them but just as you need alone time so does your dog!

In a nutshell your dog needs balance just as you do. This comes from the right kind of training as well as the right kind of attention. You must remember to be firm with them just as you would your child and understand that new and different situations create tension in them just as it does in us. Remembering to pay attention to what is going on when your dog barks will help you determine what is bothering them. Keep your calm and work with them it will be worth it in the long run!

Pet Care: Grooming Your Dog- 3 Tips to a Healthier Happier Dog August 11, 2008

We all want what is best for our dogs. Grooming is a big part of that. As with our hair your dogs hair is equally important. Your dogs can get sores and their hair matted if not properly taken care of. Below are a few tips to get you going in the right direction. Learning to take care of their hair properly now can save your dog problems in the future.

Tip1: Combing- Combing your dogs hair is important to get any knots or debris out of their coat. Though there are different types of coats on dogs just as hair on humans. This means you will need different combs.

Long Haired dogs: The best form of comb you can use on a long haired dog is a wide toothed comb. This will help you get down under their hair and comb it out thoroughly. Also keep in mind that a long haired dog’s coat gets tangled easily and requires you to comb them daily.

Short Haired Dogs: Use of a fine toothed comb will work best in a short haired dogs coat. You should make sure you are thorough when you are combing them out. However you will be able to see more of the coat on a short haired dog and see the hair underneath more easily.

Tip 2: Brushing- Brushing your dogs coat after wards is also important this can add shine and give them the polished glow you are looking for. However as with combing it is equally important to use the proper brush on your dog.

Long Haired Dogs: The Pin Brush should be used on a dog with long/fine coats. This will allow you to get into the hair and gives them shine. A Bristle brush should be used if the dog has long/thick coats. [German Shepard's/ Husky's/ Golden Retriever's] This will keep their coat shiny and polished.

Short Haired Dogs: Short haired dogs need to be brushed with grooming mitts. These will be more gentler on the dogs coat and keep them shiny and glowing. Additionally you should brush your dog once a week.

Tip 3: When brushing and Combing your dogs you should be careful around their eyes. Use of a flea comb is good to remove parasites and too get in those sensitive places.

There are thousands of dog food brands available for our dogs today. While many pet owners see dog food and merely pick the food that is the best brand; however this is not always the best nutritional decision for the dogs health. Protein is the building block for healthy bones and health immune systems for our pets.

While several people feel that “Their dogs” they eat “dog food”; we should also take into consideration the importance of a healthy diet supporting balance in their life. We have all researched at one point or another what our pets can’t eat—what will harm them and quite often how frequently to take them to the vet.

Yet many of us fail to pay attention to the amount of protein we are feeding our pets leaving it up the pretty bag, or the latest brand. This is not getting the puppy quality nutrition.

Below is a list of recommended protein levels for different stages of Dogs:

Puppy: Protein 28% Fat Content 17%

Adult Dog: Protein 18% Fat Content 9-15%

Performance Dogs: Protein 25% Fat Content 20%

Senior Dogs: Protein 25-28% Fat Content less than 17%

As you can see there is a difference in the levels of protein and fat a dog needs at different stages in its life. The protein they intake is broken down into amino acids which help strengthen their bones, joints and improve their immune system to help fight off disease. Making sure that your dog has all the nutrition they need is very important. Take care of your dog they need you!

Until next time!
